Dog Obedience Training Tips

A reliable response to simple commands – come, sit, stay, down – is at the very heart of dog obedience training. You and your dog should routinely practice basic obedience training. It remains the basis of all further training. This is vital because there are always potentially dangerous circumstances where your dog’s interest will be distracted. Reliable control over your dog can literally be life-saving. The range of personalities in dogs is wonderful. This is one of their attributes we find so appealing, but it also means that not all dogs respond to the same training methods. Choose the method of control and restraint most suitable for both of you. Modify your training method as necessary, but always keep training short, kind, and fun.

Control and Restraint

It is essential that you use an appropriate form of control when training your dog, and especially when you are in any public place. Most dogs respond to the pull of a half-check collar, but others are more responsive to head halters or harnesses. Also, where laws or common sense dictate, make sure that your dog wears a muzzle.

Make sure you position your dog’s half-check collar correctly around its neck – the soft webbing should be around the dog’s throat and the chain links should be over the top of its neck.

Pull upwards on the lead to tighten the collar. This controls unwanted activity in most dogs without causing discomfort. Avoid using check collars on dogs with delicate windpipes.
