Great article. The point about using moving forward as a reward is of particular note. Many people fall into the trap of letting their dog tug them along, not even realizing that this is a self-reinforcing behavior.

I have 2 jack russels, both 4 years old and it took me over 1 year to train the boy not to bite his leash when going for a walk! If I took the necessary steps in the beggining I would have saved alot on money on personal trainers and dog classes. Silly me!

His whole "lasso" thing seems a little weird to me. If your dog doesn't like having the leash attached to it's collar, then why not just use a harness and attach the leash to that? Or, you could use a martingale leash, like the ones they have at genuinedoggear.com, which is a collar/leash combo as an easy, effective tool to train your dog.

Potty training though simple in many ways, happens to be the corner stone of all training programs.

No matter how much the dog knows, or can do, or can respond to, if it is not house broken in its toilet habits, the poor pet loses a lot of the affection and love that it would have had if it did not make a mess in the house.

Training your dog to potty on command would be the best part of any training program.

I feel that obedience training is an essential part of overall dog care. An unruly dog that has no boundaries, is often an unhappy dog!!

Great Post. I definately agree with you on the consistency. Dogs test all the time. They are opportunists. You know this if you have ever dropped food on the kitchen floor and your dog is standing nearby. When they know you are the leader of the pack they will mind what you have to say and they will follow your cues because they trust you to do the right thing. We are the protectors, leaders, and care-givers. We have to wear different hats but the obedience is key, because without it , there is no respect and an unhealthy relationship.

I've found good success with taking your dog outside and rewarding it with treats whenever it goes outside. If you dog goes inside the house take him outside and let me know by rewarding him that this is the place to go. It will take time, but it this method has been effective in the past.

I'm a big fan of dog obedience. In fact I think that there are a lot of dog owners out there who need to to be thought how to handle their dogs.. Perhaps this could be the topic for a new story - Should pet owners be made go on a course before adopting a pet?

Definitely, the key to training a dog is being prepared. This means having both the right tools as well as you possessing the skills needed to do the training. At our site we give you some additional tips and techniques for helping train your dog when it comes to chewing up your favorite shirt, biting (even play biting), growling, etc. Check us out at:

Good point, I think it is important to make sure you watch the calorie intake when feeding your dog treats. I also agree that feeding your dog treats does not have to be expensive or unhealthy. Recently I have kinda brached out into a different market by making my own dog treats. It may sound nerdy (because it probably is) but I can control the cost and calorie intake when I make my own! Homemade Doggie Treats

The "Command Collar" link 1 bears a striking resemblance to a martingale collar Link 2. The circle can be either of chain or nylon.
I prefer these collars for training as they are much more humane than choke chains or prong collars.
I cannot say anything about his methods. I am unfamilier with him. Generally any training that uses positive renforcement gets my seal of approval (for what it's worth)

Your dog may act the way he use to after a short time but your first dog has to act dominant and wont be playing as much as he use to. This shows dominance its sort of like to dogs that playing with toys is a little immature. Take him for walks cause thats what seem to excite him and give him extra attention because he may feel like the puppy is getting more attention.

Dog obedience training doesn't get any better than this. It's called canine freestyle.

As long as the puppy is taken out right before and after it is left alone, it will be fine. you should put something down, just in case. Leave the pups favorite toys, but a stuffed Kong toy will keep them busy for quite a while.

Treats and rewards will speed up this process, puppies need motivation just like humans. Your puppy wants to please you, so when he sees how happy you are that he didn’t potty on the floor, he will want to do it again. As long as you are consistent with your training, he will be consistent in his understanding and progress.
